Your First Date

Feb 27, 2011

Your first gay date is like a rite of passage. Whether you are 15 or 55, this is a momentous occasion for you. However, don’t make it too momentous in your mind. There is nothing to fear about the process of gay dating.

There are no hard and fast rules about the dating community. You will have those who see a date as a ticket to having company for the entire night and you will have those who are dating in order to look for their lifetime partner. Either way, you are not expected to jump into anything that you’re not ready for. That’s no different in the gay community than in the straight world.

If there were any two basic social standards that a gay date would require of you it would fall under two basic categories. First, you don’t want to be outed just because someone saw you with a same sex date, and others around you would appreciate the same respect. Not everyone is ready to come tearing out of the closet on someone else’s terms.

There is little difference between a gay date and a straight date, with the exception that being obviously gay dates in public will probably draw a few more glances from the het community. If you live in a very conservative area you might be more comfortable going to a strictly gay establishment. If you are afraid that someone might see you there, remember that they are as well.

In most cases we are no longer confined to keeping our gay date in the little hole in the wall set aside and well out of view of the rest of the world. We are out and about and we take our dates where we want to go. Sometimes this calls for a bit of discretion and sometimes it doesn’t. Know your environment.

Have fun. Even if the outcome of the date isn’t everything that you want it to be going out for the first time is a special event. Let it be special and let it be a great experience from which you can draw from.
