Gay Coffee’s newest roast celebrates the Bear community
June is LGBT Pride Month, and Gay Coffee is proud to announce its newest blend which celebrates Bears and Bear culture.
Gay Coffee, which launched in October 2011 at the Castro Street Fair in San Francisco, is the unique fusion of fair trade, organic coffee and the history and culture of the LGBTQ community. Each coffee is roasted by hand, and each roast celebrates different aspects of LGBT history – using humor and education to inspire conversation. Since its launch, Gay Coffee is now selling internationally online and on the shelves of several US stores.
“Big Bear Blend” is the company’s latest roast – a robust and full bodied blend of Central American and Indonesian beans. The company had a photo contest for Bear Blend label picture – and the winning bear picture was announced earlier this month on the company’s website and Facebook page, along with a video tribute to the bear picture contest finalists.

Bear subcultures emerged in the 1980s, influenced by the the leather and BDSM communities, and offered an alternative to the 1970s gay male archetype. Bear culture redefines masculinity by embracing a vision of gay maleness that is strong, nurturing and tender. This blend celebrates big, beautiful, furry men and all those who love them!
“For the Bear Blend, we really wanted to invite Gay Coffee’s customers and fans to be part of the creative process and let them tell us what Bear Blend should look like,” says Gay Coffee founder Melissa Krueger. “Our Bear Photo contest was a lot of fun – we had submissions from all over the US and Canada – and we love that our Gay Coffee bear is a regular, “real” guy.”
Big Bear Blend is available in tins and bags for pre-ordering at gaycoffee.com and expects to begin shipping online and to store in early July. In celebration of Pride Month, all Gay Coffee products are 20% off for the duration of June.
