LGBT Estate Planning and Tax Issues

Calendar, Parenting
Estate planning for same-sex couples has evolved dramatically over the past couple of decades. In California, the first state-wide legal rights were established in 2000 under the state-wide California domestic partnership, which expanded in 2005 to become equivalent to marriage on the state level (but not federally). Same-sex marriage has evolved from state-wide recognition in 2008 for some people, to federal recognition and California reinstatement of same-sex marriage in 2013. Because of all the changes in the law, estate planning for same-sex couples is much more complicated than can appear on the surface. Not all couples are married or are planning to marry. For those that do not, they often still need help navigating the unexpected issues relating to property co-ownership, federal and state taxes, and California state domestic partnership.…

Long Legged Stork New Book for the Modern Family

Parenting
Following the success of her Your Family series, children’s author Michelle J Forte is getting her readers involved in the launch of her new book about modern families. Long Legged Stork Michelle, who lives in Adelaide with her partner Tunde, wrote and illustrated her first book Loved by Two for her one-year-old son, Elliott, after realising there were not enough children’s books that showed the range of families – single parent, same-sex, step-families – that he already encountered in daily interactions. This realization inspired the Your Family series of books, which focus on stories about modern families. It’s the support from her readership that has inspired Michelle to crowd-fund the latest book in the series, The Long-legged Stork. The new book, which will be available June 2014, follows the adventures…

Children With Same-Sex Parents are Thriving

Children With Same-Sex Parents are Thriving

Parenting
by Melissa Rodgers People who oppose the right for same-sex couples to be parents readily claim that having same-sex parents can negatively impact on children in many ways, from their psychological health to their sexual identity. However, numerous studies have been conducted into the impact that being raised by gay parents can have on children, and very little evidence has been found to support the opposing prejudiced views. In fact, studies have generally found the opposite - children thrive growing up with same-sex parents. Children are healthy and happy One such study was recently carried out by the University of Melbourne in Australia. Researchers there found that rather than being held back in some way, children with same-sex parents actually scored better on average than children from the traditional family models in terms…
