Long Island Pride Parade

Long Island Pride is coming back to Huntington with a bang this June! Celebrate your Pride on Saturday, June 8th by coming out to the 22nd Annual Long Island Pride. At 12pm, march with hundreds of community members and allies or cheer from the sidelines as the Parade travels through Huntington Village. Then spend your day in Heckscher Park for PrideFest, an all-day music festival featuring all-star entertainment and local performances. Enjoy food from a variety of vendors, check out community booths, buy a souvenir or two, and listen and dance the afternoon away with more than 13,000 other participants.

This year’s theme is Super Pride, a time where superheroes in our community are called to action to celebrate Pride while also recognizing the heroic steps we have taken towards equality for all GLBT people in the local and national levels. Leave your cape at home or come decked out in full costume, but don’t hide behind an alias: we’ll see you at Long Island Super Pride.

Long Island Pride traces its origins to 1991 when Long Island Lesbian and Gay Pride Freedom Committee founders Leah Gustavson, David Kilmnick, Cara Wilson and Steve Henaghan approached the Town of Huntington to grant a permit to hold the first Pride Parade. The request was denied by the town on the grounds that only “traditional” parades were allowed on Huntington’s streets. The committee was represented by the ACLU and the matter was heard in a federal court on May 28, 1991 by Judge Leonard D. Wexler who ruled in favor of the committee and granted the parade permit. The first Long Island Pride Parade was held on June 9, 1991.

Following the Long Island Pride Parade, PrideFest 2013 will be held in Huntington’s Heckscher Park from 1pm to 6pm. This year, expect big changes, bigger entertainment, and the biggest show of pride yet. There’s something for everyone!

PrideFest Rocks Heckscher Park!
Following the Parade, the fun continues in Huntington’s Heckscher Park with an all-new PrideFest from 1-6pm. PrideFest will feature a VIP Lounge, health pavilion, beer and wine garden, and information booths. Admission is free and open to everyone, though donations are encouraged to help fund this event for future years.

The PrideFest stage has an entertainment lineup like Long Island Pride has never seen before. Past entertainment featured Frenchie Davis, dance music sensations La Bouche, Reina, Veronica, and Lucas Prata, plus talented community members and local DJ’s performing all day long. This year’s entertainment will be announced soon.

Pride Guides will be available in early June and more than 20,000 copies will be distributed throughout Long Island to over 200 locations to help you party at Pride: learn more about entertainment, see photos from last year’s event, and much more.

Stay connected to Long Island Pride during the events for updates and alerts by following us on Twitter and liking us on Facebook. Tweet with us all day and submit your photos for a chance to be featured on our Flickr and Facebook pages. One lucky person who submits a great photo will be selected to win a free t-shirt.

The following year, in 1970 the cities of Chicago, Los Angeles and New York all held parades commemorating the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. Since then, cities around the globe have started marches and parades as well.

The first march that happened in Spokane was literally on the sidewalks and was sponsored by PFLAG. The following year a permit was ordered and the march was in the streets, followed by a small rally in the part. In 2004 our march turned into a parade. That first parade brought together 300 members of the LGBTQA population. We’ve grown a bit since then, with 2011 bringing in 5,200+ people. Large organizations like UUCS (Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane), Spokane AIDS Network, and Planned Parenthood as well as smaller groups like Spokane Transpeople, EWU Pride Center, and the SFCC Alliance participate in the parade. We have groups that march with banners, groups on bicycles, others in cars and floats. Some make their own music and others bring their own. Floats and lots of Rainbow are encouraged.

We invite you to join us on the second Saturday in June in Downtown Spokane. The parade starts at Noon so be sure to get down early. Following the parade please walk on down to Gondola Meadows at Riverfront Park (South-West corner of the park by the Bloomsday Running Statues) for the Rainbow Festival. This is a day to celebrate who we are, honor the past, and look forward to the future. Be out and be proud.

Capital City Pride

Welcome to Des Moines Pride! Capital City Pride-Des Moines, Iowa, is a group of proactive individuals who are striving to recognize the importance of gay culture in the Midwest. The annual Pride celebration, held the second weekend in June every summer, consists of a street party, a parade, and a show with all types of community exhibitors and musical performances! Our mission is to promote acceptance, tolerance, and understanding of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community through education, programming, and visibility.

We accomplish this by promoting a healthy community image and awareness, creating a positive public education and discourse, and developing an effective community collaboration in which our collective resources can be utilized.

The Des Moines metro area is in the midst of an exciting renaissance, and along with that change comes the responsibility of enhancing culture on all different levels. Capital City Pride is proud to be part of that change. Thanks to everyone who helps support Pride weekend and other events throughout the year!

Pride weekend would not be possible if it weren’t for the support of the Des Moines metro area community and dedicated volunteers who give their time and energy in making sure that each year’s event is something for everyone to enjoy!

Pridefest

For over 25 years, PrideFest Milwaukee has been proudly celebrating LGBT culture and community!

We’re the world’s largest LGBT festival with permanent festival grounds, owned and operated entirely by volunteers each and every year. PrideFest Milwaukee does not have one paid employee, simply the dedication and devotion to bring together a festival each and every year for our community.

However, Milwaukee’s LGBT celebrations go all the way back to 1974, when 350 people attended the Gay People’s Union Ball.

Other dances and parties followed in the years to come, but it wasn’t until 1988 that the first official events were hosted by the Milwaukee Lesbian/Gay Pride Committee. Several hundred people participated in the week-long celebration, which included a softball tournament at Mitchell Park, picnic, formal ball, and film festival.

In June 1989, the MLGPC organized a march from Walker’s Point to a rally in Cathedral Square.

Milwaukee Mayor John Norquist addressed the crowd of 1000, affirming, “We are proud of who you are.” By the end of the day, religious organizations threatened Norquist with a recall effort, and the MLGPC rally led the local news. Milwaukee’s LGBT community would no longer allow themselves to be ignored.

In the early 90s, the rally moved to Juneau Park along the lakefront to accommodate the growing crowds. Entertainment and food were added, creating a festival atmosphere.

In 1994, the original MLGPC was dissolved and the new PrideFest was incorporated. The festival moved to Veterans Park for two days of activities featuring exhibits, three stages, and dozens of craftspeople and vendors. “Light Up the Sky with Pride” was added to the line-up in 1995, making PrideFest the first Pride event in the nation to host its own fireworks display.

PrideFest’s biggest and most exciting move occurred in 1996, this time to the home of SummerFest – the Henry W. Maier Festival Park.

With permanent stages, food buildings, vendor pavilions and full support from Milwaukee World Festivals, PrideFest had the honor of kicking off Milwaukee’s festival season.

By 1997, PrideFest was hosting entertainment on four stages,

a dance tent, presentations and lectures, the Miller Lite Volleyball Tournament, a parade, vendors, a religious ceremony, a mass wedding/commitment ceremony and the fireworks show.

In 2003, the PrideFest Task Force was formed to make the festival financially viable and guarantee future celebrations. The Task Force ensured that nearly 15,807 people attended and enjoyed an entertainment lineup that included national music sensations Kristine W. and Amber. That year, the crowd of 12,278 attendees danced to the music of ABBA tribute band “Bjorn Again,” leaving the festival with a sense of fulfillment.

Over the past several years, PrideFest’s headliners have read like a who’s-who of the entertainment world.

Cyndi Lauper, Kathy Griffin, Pat Benatar, Chaka Kahn, Wanda Sykes, Patti LaBelle, Joan Rivers, Indigo Girls, t.A.T.u.’s Lena Katina, Margaret Cho, Joan Jett, En Vogue, Taylor Dane, and RuPaul have all graced the main stage.

The Dance Pavilion has become a destination in its own right.

National and local DJs spin for rapt audiences while roving performance artists hype up the crowd.

In 2007, the Health & Wellness Area debuted, increasing PrideFest’s commitment to the community. Currently, over 30 organizations take part in the area, which includes HIV & AIDS testing, interactive performances on a dedicated stage, and prize opportunities for those who visit.

Year after year, the festival has surprised and delighted proud attendees of all kinds.

This year and beyond, PrideFest continues to celebrate the diversity of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) culture and community.
