Pulse Orlando Benefit Album

At the one-year mark of a day that shall live in infamy, Centaur Entertainment released one of the most important benefit albums ever created – the Official Pulse Orlando Gay Days Benefit Album. What happened on Sunday, June 12, 2016, was a horrific day in Orlando and in our nation. Pulse Nightclub in Orlando became the site of the deadliest mass shooting by a single gunman on U.S. soil, resulting in the untimely deaths of 49 innocent souls. On May 4, 2017, onePULSE Foundation unveiled plans for the creation of a permanent memorial and announced the formation of a national Board of Trustees, including the establishment of a significant fund. This fund will support the construction and maintenance of the memorial, community grants to care for the survivors and victims’…

International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

Advocacy, Calendar, Community
In at least 76 countries around the world today, same-sex relationships are illegal, at times involving lifetime imprisonment. In 10 countries the death penalty is possible for same-sex acts. In almost all countries, freedom for people to live out and to express their true gender identities – and to have them rightfully recognized by the state – is harshly limited by transphobic laws and attitudes. But even in progressive countries, violence and discrimination against LGBT people still exist in the form of discriminatory laws, unjust representations in the media, unfair treatment by employers, negative social attitudes, and even in everyday interactions with people we care about, and who care about us.Homophobia and transphobia target all people who don’t conform to majority sexual and gender roles, and they affect the lives…

Apply for an NYC Pride Community Grant!

Apply for an NYC Pride Community Grant!

Community
Every year, NYC Pride awards thousands of dollars in grants to local LGBT-friendly and LGBT-serving community organizations. These grants are “working” grants: in order to receive funds, members or volunteers from an organization must perform specific functions or services—as a group—at NYC Pride’s annual events. Grants are awarded in amounts ranging from $1,000 to $3,000, depending upon the assignment. A designated individual from your organization must complete the online application. Once submitted, your application will be reviewed and a determination will be made. If awarded a grant opportunity, your organization will receive an official agreement, outlining NYC Pride’s expectations of your organization and what your organization can expect NYC Pride to provide in return. To Apply Click here to view and download the Community Grants Application. Fill out and save…

6 Historical Figures You Didn’t Know Were LGBTI+

History books like to make events out to be black text on white paper — but life isn’t always like a book or movie — and people aren’t just one thing or another. We all fall on a spectrum of gender and sexuality. Repression of people who didn’t fall on the “normal” sides of the spectrum — though normal describes a washing setting more than a human being — was rampant in the not-to-long-ago past. There’s more to their story, and it’s time to get educated about a few particularly pivotal, rad and real individuals who make up the colorful history of the world: Marlon Brando Born on April 3, 1924, Marlon Brando grew up in Omaha, Nebraska. His found fame fairly early in his career with a notable role…

Rainbow Toastmasters

Rainbow Toastmasters

Community
Recently, I was invited to The SF Rainbow Toastmasters.  It was a fun-filled evening as members presented and critiqued three speeches.  In addition, there was a round of table topics where members stand up and have 1-2 minutes to offer their best to response to impromptu topics. We sat down with Rainbow Toastmaster, Michael Platania to learn more. How did the Rainbow Toastmasters begin? Ken Stram was the founder. He started the club about six or seven years ago. He was the Economic Development Director at the SF LGBT Center and thought this would be a good program to have. He eventually left the center and Rainbow, but we are very excited that he has recently rejoined Rainbow! Why an LGBT chapter? To give us a safe space to speak…

Day of Silence 2017

Calendar, Community
Day of Silence – GLSEN's Day of Silence is a student-led national event organized in thousands of schools, bringing awareness to the silencing effects of anti-LGBTQ name-calling, bullying, and harassment in schools. Students from middle school to college take a vow of silence in an effort to encourage schools and classmates to address the problem of anti-LGBTQ behavior by illustrating the silencing effect of bullying and harassment on LGBTQ students and those perceived to be LGBTQ. Apr 21, 2017 GLSEN (pronounced "glisten") was founded in 1990 by a small, but dedicated group of teachers in Massachusetts who came together to improve an education system that too frequently allows its lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) students to be bullied, discriminated against, or fall through the cracks. Over 25 years…
