San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus responds to the election results by announcing a tour to support the LGBTQ community in RED states. Like many of you, the 300+ members of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus family - singers, staff and volunteers - have, along with the entire LGBTQ community, spent the last few days navigating our collective way through feelings of shock and despair. Rather than succumbing to feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, we've asked, "what can we do to make a difference?" In response to the recent presidential election and the voices of the so-called "silent majority," SFGMC will pursue a "Red State Freedom Tour" in the summer of 2018. While the exact itinerary has not been determined, it is our plan to go on a whistle-stop tour through…

Mark Segal, PGN publisher, is the nation’s most-award-winning commentator in LGBT media. He can be reached at mark@epgn.com. Vice President Biden’s comments about marriage equality were no surprise to me. Why? The night before the president’s statement on same-sex marriage, I was honored to be the keynote speaker at Drexel University’s gay pride celebration. After my talk, someone asked whether I thought President Obama would support gay marriage. My response was, “He’s evolving on the issue and I expect that evolution to be complete by the end of November.” It got the expected laugh. Less than 24 hours later, the evolution was complete, six months ahead of schedule. That announcement put LGBT equality front and center in the presidential race and, thus far, no political pundit worth his or her…

Historic vote extends EU asylum standards to transgender people

News
[caption id="" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Image via Wikipedia"][/caption] Today the European Parliament formally adopted a new set of asylum rules for the European Union. The binding rules now include gender identity as a ground of persecution, which EU Member States must take into account. Governments have already agreed to the changes, which are final. Until now, EU asylum law foresaw that “gender related aspects might be considered” by national asylum authorities when examining the potential persecution of specific social groups in their country of origin. The resolution adopted today has replaced this text, and now specifies that “gender related aspects, including gender identity, shall be given due consideration”. The text now refers to gender identity specifically, and obliges Member States to consider gender-related aspects. Before, EU countries could still choose not…

News
[caption id="" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Image via Wikipedia"][/caption] Turkey’s largest gay and lesbian Internet community, www.hadigayri.com , has been shut down by the Turkish Telecommunication Directorate, or TIB. The Web site has more than 200,000 members. According to its administrators and members, the site does not contain any pornographic or criminal content. The directorate blocked the site without providing any information to the owners or issuing a demand to take down certain content, site mangers said, calling the action unlawful and arbitrary. The judiciary previously refused the demand to close down Lambda İstanbul and Kaos GL, the city’s main gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender organizations. Site managers said the new decision came after previous attempts to close down the online networks of members of these organizations. “The site has a wide…
