Melbourne Queer Film Festival

Melbourne Queer Film Festival
Melbourne Queer Film Festival
MQFF 25th Anniversary, March 19 to 30, 2015.

The Melbourne Queer Film Festival is one of Melbourne’s most respected and successful annual arts events. It’s the longest running queer film festival in Australia and the second largest film festival in Victoria.

Over the past 25 years Melbourne Queer Film Festival has established itself as the pre-eminent queer film event in Australia, and is considered to be one of the top queer film festivals in the world.  MQFF screens more than 120 features, shorts and documentaries, alongside a program of community, industry and celebratory events over 12 days in March/April each year at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI).  It is one of the significant events staged on Melbourne’s busy cultural calendar and is Victoria’s second largest film festival.

As Melbourne’s second largest film event, it’s no surprise that over 270,000 people are estimated to have attended the Festival and other MQFF events with the Festival growing from 5,000 attendees in the late 1990’s to upwards of 20,000 in the 2010’s.  The MQFF audience is diverse: members of the LGBTI communities, film industry, cinema buffs – and those who just want to catch a good film – along with interstate and regional visitors.

MQFF is committed to supporting film-makers producing queer themed content by showcasing and awarding a number of cash prizes at each Festival.  MQFF is also committed to championing emerging Australian talent and runs a number of panel discussions and industry sessions during the Festival.

Originally called the Melbourne International Lesbian & Gay Film & Video Festival, our first Festival was held in 1991 and in 2015 we celebrated 25 years of bringing the best of queer cinema to Melbourne audiences.  Along the way we had a name change, to the Melbourne Queer Film & Video Festival in 1993, before settling on Melbourne Queer Film Festival in 2003.

We have been based in the heart of the city, and the City of Melbourne, since 1992,  screening originally at the State Film Theatre at Treasury Place and also the Capitol Theatre in Swanston Street. Since 2004 MQFF has screened in the heart of Melbourne, joining forces with our Cultural Partner, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) at Federation Square, the first film festival to use the screening facility.

MQFF is a non-profit organisation goverened by a voluntary Board of Mangement, staffed by a small team of committed professionals and supported by an army of generous volunteers.

What have we screened over the years? Check out the guides from past years in the Program Archive.
