I met Melissa a few years back. She was working on a business plan for a craft beer specialty shop. We’ve stayed in touch over the years, and I am pleased to present Melissa and The Good Hop Bottle Shop in this week’s focus on #queerbiz.
The Good Hop Bottle Shop is your one-stop shop for all things hop! We are a bottle shop and taproom serving hundreds of beers by the bottle available for takeaway or onsite consumption, as well as 16 rotating taps serving up California beers. Come in, check out our tasty beers, and tip a few back with your friends! We’re just off 19th Street BART in downtown Oakland, close to the restaurants and theaters in Uptown!
Why did you want to start your own business?
I had spent 16 years of my adult career working for others and watching them make money and ultimately they were always the final say on all decisions. I felt it was time for me to have that freedom to make my own decisions and control my own destiny.
What is the best thing about running Good Hop?
The Good Hop got me back into my beloved craft beer industry. Because I represent so many people’s beers it keeps me up to date with what the industry and all the other brewers are doing. Also, it is a stepping stone to the ultimate dream which is to own my own brewery someday!
What’s the industry buzzword that annoys you the most these days?
I don’t know if it’s an industry buzzword or more of a saying but it annoys me when people talk to you about your business and hear all about it and then say – “you know what you should do…”
I hear you have a secret weapon – how has Kathryn help your entrepreneurial journey?
I think Kathryn’s unyielding support for me makes me feel like I can do anything. She brings her robust personality and flair to areas where I may get bogged down in crossing all my T’s and dotting all my I’s. I think she brings my little bar on the corner into the realm of personal.
Let’s cut to the chase – what are you drinking these days?
To be honest, either at The Good Hop (seriously, I practically live there), or at my house (I do mostly live there!) I have so many breweries with beers at The Good Hop that when I can’t get out to all of them at least I can still drink their beers at my bar!
What’s the biggest secret to a good beer?
I come from the side of passion and art. The craft of it all. I think if a brewer is just going through the motions it shows. The secret is that if a beer isn’t that good the brewer shouldn’t put it out on the market.
Can I get laid if I visit Good Hop?
I suppose that depends on how messy of a drinker you are! Actually, I have heard rumblings that we are showing up on Tinder lists as a good place for a first Tinder date.
What’s the last great thing you binge-watched and why?
Shameless (the American version). It speaks to me about family and the constant struggle of the desire to have a better life. It’s just so across the line of anything I have ever experienced with my family and it makes my life look calm as hell.
What is your top secret superpower?
Sleeping! I can sleep anywhere anytime. Even during the most stressful times of opening a business and continuing to run it, my head hits the pillow and I am out. No nightmare dreams about the biz burning to the ground or laying awake staring at the ceiling with and endless loop of stress running through my head. Head to pillow equals sound sleep. I’d share it if I could. The sleepless struggle for some is so real.
Who should play you in the movie version of your life?
Matt Damon. People say I sometimes look like him. Although it would probably be his most subdued (possibly boring) job considering the other roles he has played.
How long would you survive a zombie apocalypse?
If I could appease them with beer… a long time! Otherwise, it would be for as long as it took to drink myself to death in the walk-in cooler.
What are you most looking forward to in 2017?
Despite an already incredibly rocky 15 day start, I think this is the year that I get a solid handle on running my business smoothly, both financially and staffing. I hope that will lead to some more time for myself and my family, and thusly lead to the ultimate goal of all of this which is beginning the design for my own commercial brewery.
That last one was a bit tricky but I really do believe that!
