Striking Down Don’t Ask Don’t Tell: Where do we go from here?

Advocacy, Calendar
Striking Down Don't Ask Don't Tell: Where do we go from here? November 9, 2010 with Professor Pam Karlan This past September, a federal judge declared the U.S. military's ban on openly gay service members unconstitutional. President Barack Obama has promised he would work to repeal the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy. What do these promises hold for LGBT servicemembers, and where do we go from here? Join fellow Stanford alumni for a discussion with Stanford law professor Pamela Karlan, Co-Director, Supreme Court Litigation Clinic; Aaron Belkin, director of the Palm Center and an expert on LGBT in the military; and Zoe Dunning, MBA '93, co-chair of Servicemembers Legal Defense Network and a retired and much decorated Navy Commander, who holds the distinction of serving her country as an openly…

News, Politics
Gay rights advocates waiting for the Senate to repeal "don’t ask, don’t tell" got the message loud and clear from Republicans on Tuesday -- don’t hold your breath. Voices of Honor tour -These 800 flags are in place for the Voices of Honor tour and each of them represent a specialist that has been discharged under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." God had a busy week

News
This week both Carrie Prejean and AZ Gov Jan Brewer both announced that God had picked them to save the world from gays.  Apparently, He is too busy picking the new Idol judges to do it himself.  In other news, the Respect for Marriage bill was introduced to overturn DOMA, while the gay community is getting sick and tired of Bar Raids and anti-gay cops abusing their power. Seasons of Pride House effort to repeal DOMA may be sabotaged by lukewarm Democratic support. But the real danger to the bill’s success appears to come from Congressional Democrats, especially openly-gay Representative Barney Frank (D-NY) and Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Both ...Frank and Pelosi have balked at supporting the effort to repeal DOMA, on the grounds that the timing is bad, and that…

Rome wasn’t built in a day

News
OK, so maybe Obama isn't the worst thing to happen to the LGBT community.  Is he moving as fast as we would like?  Nope.  Has there been some major f*@k ups - DOMA, DADT - Absolutely!  But Obama continues to support equality and say the right things (albeit actions speak louder than words) when it comes to Gay issues.  Which is more than any previous president has done.  And don't forget we have Bill to thank for both DOMA and DADT. Does mean the LGBT community should let up?  NO, NO, NO!!! Absolutely not!  While it truly appears we have a friend residing at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave that doesn't mean we let up on our pursuit of equality - if anything we ramp it up a notch.  Beyond the President,…

Mr Jones Goes to Washington

Advocacy
Recently, we chatted with Cleve Jones about the March on Washington, his critics and DOJ’s response to DOMA. What has been the criticism against A National March? It’s too expensive, it redirects resources and the timing isn’t right.  The timing couldn’t be better.  We are seeing a backlash to the DOJ’s defense of DOMA, a growing inpatients with the Obama Administration’s lack of movement on LGBT issues – suggesting the timing is indeed right for a grassroots movement to challenge our representatives and congress members to grant equality to all citizens. It’s not about a big flashy, expensive march with parties and such – it’s about launching a grass roots effort to organize LGBT constituents in all 435 congressional districts a year before the 2010 mid-term elections. How did you…
