Israel, the gays and Equality Forum

Opinion
by Mark Segal The last couple of years have seen progressive LGBT people taking on issues other than equality, as well as bringing the debate into the community. Israel and the Palestinian cause has been a flashpoint. With Equality Forum in Philadelphia poised to honor Israel this May, several progressive blogs have denounced the organization and suggested the honor be withdrawn. Their argument is easy to appreciate: Israel’s oppression of the Palestinians and Palestinian state. Those progressives might have a point, but that point is misleading and downright anti-equality. Full disclosure: I’m Jewish, but also have been a member of “Peace Now,” an organization that has often been at odds with the Israeli government. I’ve traveled throughout the Middle East, and was one of the first LGBT reporters to do a…

How did we tell the Kids?

Film, Parenting
We started making "Gay Family Values" videos as a response to prop 8 here in Ca. These videos have been a huge hit. We have come to understand that the reason these videos are so popular is that people don't get to see what it means to be a gay couple in a long term relationship raising children. Our family is no better and no worse then any other family. We have been getting lots of questions about our family and in the past we would respond to every email we received. We have decided to open our family up to questions you may have Questions this week - 1. Why Daddy Jay & Daddy Bryan? 2. How did we explain to Daniel & Selena about us being gay? &…

National Equality March

Calendar, Film
Official Website: http://www.NationalEqualityMarch.com On October 10-11, 2009, we will gather in Washington DC from all across America to let our elected leaders know that now is the time for full equal rights for LGBT people. We will gather. We will march. And we will leave energized and empowered to do the work that needs to be done in every community across the nation. Our single demand: Equal protection in all matters governed by civil law in all 50 states. Our philosophy: As members of every race, class, faith, and community, we see the struggle for LGBT equality as part of a larger movement for peace and social justice. Our strategy: Decentralized organizing for this march in every one of the 435 Congressional districts will build a network to continue organizing…

Time to Go Away

Film
National Organization for Marriage (NOM) has stunned the nation and the online community with its breathtakingly stupid ads, its boob-slipping mascots (Ms. California), and its obnoxious spokespeople (Maggie Gallagher). They spew the same points over and over again, appealing only to fear and ignorance in people. They disregard Constitutional rights, they disregard the fact that they have no right to define a good American family, and they disregard any evidence that might point otherwise. NOM claim this to be their most effective statement: "Gays and Lesbians have a right to live as they choose, they don't have the right to redefine marriage for all of us." NOM seems to have forgotten that they don't own the word either. It is not just homosexual couples who want to see marriage equality.…

Never Give Up!

Politics
[caption id="attachment_541" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="One Mission - Equality"][/caption] Dear Love Warriors. Today was not a good day for equality.  In listening to the oral arguments on Proposition 8 today, it appears that the California Supreme Court will uphold the validity of Proposition 8 and, in so doing, enshrine discrimination in the California Constitution.  This does not mean that the Court has abandoned its holdings in the marriage cases.  The Court reaffirmed the importance of its holding in the marriage cases that same sex couples must be accorded equal protection of the law.  In spite of this, it appears that the Court believes that will of the people is the highest principle of California law and can trump equal protection.  It is apparent from the discussion among the Justices that if…

It sure was a nice day to get married . . .

Politics
The sun was shining, a friendly crowd had gathered at City Hall and inside magic was happening. Today was the first full day of same sex marriages in California and San Francisco was a great place to experience it. I’ve lived in SF now for 8 years and the nice thing about going a LGBT event like this is seeing “family.” While I didn’t know anyone getting married today (our first marriage that we are invited to is Saturday) – I knew the supporters. Of course, I ran into City Supervisor Bevan Dufty, all aglow with his baby. Later, Fernando (Host of the Energy 92.7 Morning Show – the first openly gay radio morning show). Fernando and I shared a table this year at IBR. I also ran into Mike…

California Approves Gay Marriage. Again.

Politics
For the second time, today the California legislature approved same-sex marriage. And Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has vowed to veto the gay marriage bill as he did in 2005. He has until October 14th to sign or veto. California presently permits same-sex couples to register as domestic partners. Schwarzenegger claims to represent a new kind of Republican, more in touch with today's voters - Hey Arnie, if you truly what to distance yourself from your fellow GOPers, here's your chance.

Do you think Larry Kramer reads our blog?

Politics
Last week I talked about the lack of support from the Democratic Candidates. I Voted for Hillary . . . In Kramer's opinion piece in the Los Angeles Times - Why do straights hate gays? he notes 'there is not one candidate running for public office anywhere who dares to come right out, unequivocally, and say decent, supportive things about us. Gays should not vote for any of them. There is not a candidate or major public figure who would not sell gays down the river. . ." Kramer has always been somewhat of a lightning rod in the gay community. He speaks his mind, he takes risks, he offends, he cajoles - what more could you ask for in a activists. At 72, he is still an amazing presence,…
