LGBTQ Camps

LGBTQ Camps

Youth
When I was growing up, I longed to go to a camp, but there was just one problem: there wasn’t one for me. Considering I didn’t even have the language or a safer space to explore gender and sexuality, and that my family wasn’t exactly supportive initially when I came out to them, a camp for LGBTQ youth was out of the question. Growing up as a young LGBTQ person can be confusing, scary, and isolating. For our older generations, particularly when we didn’t have the internet as a resource the way we do now, they were forced to live in silence or sneak around in underground groups or events if they did happen to come across someone else who was “like them”. There weren’t Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs or other…

LGBTQ Workplace Discrimination

LGBTQ Workplace Discrimination

Advice, Advocacy
Fields That Still See the Most Discrimination: How Do We Bridge This Gap? Discrimination in the workplace may be illegal, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. For the LGBTI+ community, workplace discrimination is still something that runs rampant. While some industries, areas, and companies are welcoming and accepting of the LGBTI+ community, many others still have a long way to go. Unfortunately, many people like to believe that the United States is much more progressive than it actually is. To many, it’s impossible to believe that employers can still discriminate against the LGBTI+ community. This kind of thinking eliminates the pressure from companies unwilling to make necessary changes. Without the right education, these issues can be brushed under the rug. Understanding workplace discrimination is the first step in making…

Often, we have ideas rattling around in our brains. It's the thing they always resurface in quiet moments.  It's the “I should…” thing that nags you. As a business owner, I am always looking for ways to grow my business. Smart ways to grow my business, not “Build a million followers in a week” kind of stuff, but serious strategies and best practices to build a true business network. I've been doing this Marketing thing for close to 15 years, and here is what I've learned so far. Most local B2B business happens via word of mouth. As a rule, accountants do get business because they tweet, but because one of their customers was happy with their services and referred them to a business colleague. Social media, websites help reinforce…

Hardships in the LGBTQ+ Community Increase the Risk for Substance Abuse

Community
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, researchers estimate that 20 to 30 percent of the LGBTQ+ community struggles with a substance use disorder — more than double the rate of the general population. Those in the LGBTQ+ community face unique cultural, emotional and social challenges in regards to substance abuse. They also face difficult situations related to their family life, mental health, and sexual or gender identity. Some LGBTQ+ individuals turn to drugs and alcohol to cope with these challenges. Drug and alcohol abuse is also prevalent in LGBTQ+ culture, especially in the social scene. This combination of factors places the community at a greater risk for developing a substance use disorder. Stress at Home LGBTQ+ youths often face problems at home that can create high…
