That human journalistic flaw

That human journalistic flaw

News
Mark Segal, PGN publisher, is the nation’s most-award-winning commentator in LGBT media. He can be reached at mark@epgn.com. Vice President Biden’s comments about marriage equality were no surprise to me. Why? The night before the president’s statement on same-sex marriage, I was honored to be the keynote speaker at Drexel University’s gay pride celebration. After my talk, someone asked whether I thought President Obama would support gay marriage. My response was, “He’s evolving on the issue and I expect that evolution to be complete by the end of November.” It got the expected laugh. Less than 24 hours later, the evolution was complete, six months ahead of schedule. That announcement put LGBT equality front and center in the presidential race and, thus far, no political pundit worth his or her…

Israel, the gays and Equality Forum

Opinion
by Mark Segal The last couple of years have seen progressive LGBT people taking on issues other than equality, as well as bringing the debate into the community. Israel and the Palestinian cause has been a flashpoint. With Equality Forum in Philadelphia poised to honor Israel this May, several progressive blogs have denounced the organization and suggested the honor be withdrawn. Their argument is easy to appreciate: Israel’s oppression of the Palestinians and Palestinian state. Those progressives might have a point, but that point is misleading and downright anti-equality. Full disclosure: I’m Jewish, but also have been a member of “Peace Now,” an organization that has often been at odds with the Israeli government. I’ve traveled throughout the Middle East, and was one of the first LGBT reporters to do a…

Let the fueds begin

News
This week's news cycles were all about MJ.  The King of Pop had a classy sendoff and now it's going to get interesting.  The family is already fighting over Micheal's final resting place - seems Joe Jackson and Jermaine want to sell tickets to Neverland and MJ could be the feature attraction.  The rest of the family wants his body laid to rest elsewhere out of respect for his wish, following his acquittal on child-molestation charges, to never return to Neverland.  And don't get me started on the whole missing brain thing. The juiciest tidbit to come out on the gay feud front is Lambda Legal, NCLR and the ACLU's attempt to intervene in Perry v. Schwarzenegger, the Olson-Boies federal suit (filed as American Foundation for Equal Rights) designed to…
