Marriage Equality in Europe

Marriage Equality in Europe

Community
My name is Maria and I am owner at Maria Assia Photography (http://mariaassia.com/). I regularly write about marriage and I produced this info-graphic attached about the legality of same-sex marriage in Europe. Marriage Equality in Europe Following the historic U.S Supreme Court decision to legalize same- sex marriage in the United States, I figured it would be interesting to see where Europe stands on the issue. It was interesting to find out that the Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage, but it was surprising to see that countries like Italy do not recognize same-sex relationships. Support for same sex marriage amongst the public also varies a lot from country to country. Many countries in Europe only allow registered partnerships but these partnerships do not…

LGBT Estate Planning and Tax Issues

Calendar, Parenting
Estate planning for same-sex couples has evolved dramatically over the past couple of decades. In California, the first state-wide legal rights were established in 2000 under the state-wide California domestic partnership, which expanded in 2005 to become equivalent to marriage on the state level (but not federally). Same-sex marriage has evolved from state-wide recognition in 2008 for some people, to federal recognition and California reinstatement of same-sex marriage in 2013. Because of all the changes in the law, estate planning for same-sex couples is much more complicated than can appear on the surface. Not all couples are married or are planning to marry. For those that do not, they often still need help navigating the unexpected issues relating to property co-ownership, federal and state taxes, and California state domestic partnership.…

How important is “gay owned” when you shop?

Community
Answer by Erica Friedman: This is a good question.I'm not sure that I would call it "important" per se, for myself. But it certainly is a factor. If I'm looking for a home contractor, I wouldn't go out of my way to look for a gay contractor.  However, when I looked for an accountant, I did go out of my way to find one, because being a same-sex couple right now in the US means you accountant has to understand the state and federal issues around your relationship and money. A gay accountant in a long-term relationship is going to be extra motivated in that regard. ^_^  (We've been using this accountant for more than a decade, he and his team are amazing.) So, where it's relevant, that factor will…

Who Am I?

Who Am I?

Advice
Alone, scared and confused.  These words could be used to describe a lost child, but in this case, they’re not.  They are the very real and daily feelings of a person who is questioning their sexuality.  For those of you who’ve been there, this may take you back to a place you’d rather not visit.  For many others, it represents the beginning of a totally new and ultimately joyful journey — one of living the life you were meant to and being open and honest about yourself, maybe for the first time. We are everywhere — mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, aunts and friends, discovering and then many times hiding, a major piece of ourselves — our same-sex attraction. For some of us the internal conflict began when we were young. …

When a partner cheats

Advice
My partner cheated; can I ever trust him or her again? The answer is yes, you can trust again.  Can you trust the person who cheated on you ever again?  That depends on many factors. Need some advice?  Write to Dear Janeen First of all, when someone cheats in a relationship, it is of utmost importance for the person who cheats to take responsibility for the action and the effects the cheating has had on their partner.  Secondly, both partners need to commit to figuring out what the cheating was all about.  Often with cheating comes lying, half truths and communication challenges.  If both partners are able to commit to the following steps, trust can be rebuilt and your relationship can strengthen as a result.  If you cannot rebuild trust,…

Gay Unions and also Straight Marriages

Community
Many years have passed and still the hot theme on gay marriages has continued to be a controversial one. Together with its character many people have showed their opinions on the controversial subject matter either with the pro or against position. Though there are a few states which tend to be more open-handed in providing equal privileges to gay and lesbian marriage, Massachusetts stands out as the only state that will allow the said marriage. Rhode Island has been generous enough to acknowledge gay marriage in Massachusetts. The White House is immovable on the fact that matrimony solely occurs regarding a man and a woman. This has been their own stand for many years. There are some states though that do recognize and permit same-sex unions but many states tend…
